A trader made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was officially announced, sparking debate about whether someone profited from non-public details of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the month's conclusion increased in the period preceding President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that Maduro had been apprehended.

One account, which joined the platform recently and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a initial bet of over $32,000.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that users put the odds of a political change at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

But the odds had jumped to 11% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the first hours of January 3rd, suggesting a sudden change in market sentiment right before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a trade based on non-public details," stated Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other platform users also made tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Elected officials are growing concerned.

A bill presented on the start of the week would prevent public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with traders able to predict everything from sports outcomes to politics.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. But it has received a warmer welcome during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting arena.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
