Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
