Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several access tunnels providing entry to the site... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "They were part of a great many British personnel on duty over the festive period. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it described as a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, following an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
