Lando Norris narrowly beat fellow driver and championship contender Oscar Piastri for the top spot in the closing stages of practice at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The British racer, who grabbed the points lead from Piastri by one point after his victory in Mexico City a fortnight back, beat the Melbourne-born driver by 0.023 seconds. Earlier in the session, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair throughout the hour before sprint qualifying scheduled for the evening session. The Red Bull star, the only other driver in the championship fight, sitting 36 points behind Norris, ended up in 17th position as his Red Bull team opted for a alternative strategy. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda was the only driver to have an incident, albeit lightly, when he rotated at Turn Four soon after starting. Tsunoda lost control over the curbs on exit before sliding over the run-off area, and was blessed to get away with just a slight brush of the wall. The Ferrari of the seven-time champion also had a spin, at the conclusion of the session, spinning around through the quick descending corner leading to the last turn on to the pit straight. Hamilton finished practice in P19, one place behind teammate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren pair were far ahead of the remaining drivers, with Nico Hulkenberg's car P3, 0.619 seconds behind Piastri's pace. The Aston Martin of the Spanish driver was fourth quickest, with the Sauber of Bortoleto fifth from Mercedes' George Russell and Alpine's Gasly and the Williams of Carlos Sainz.
