Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a clamor to include additional classifications to recognize unsung work and fill the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category that year
- A different innovative game was excluded that year
- Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
