The Most Disappointing Titles of This Year, Based on Metacritic

At every turn, fans are eagerly sharing their rankings of the top games of 2025. However, what of the stinkers, the failures? It's time to take a few moments to recognize the lowest-rated games of the year, according to review aggregator Metacritic. Could each of these games as disappointing as their scores suggest? We shall see.

10. Welcome Tour for Switch 2

Metascore: 54/100, Audience Score: 3.4/10

Initial reactions to this tech demo were heavily influenced by its $9.99 price tag, with many expressing disappointment it wasn't a complimentary title like similar console launches. Professional assessment varied dramatically, from scathing critiques to slightly kinder takes that highlighted the delightful software underneath the controversy. In spite of the controversy, the title proved to be a surprisingly robust digital seller during its launch month.

9. Rennsport

Aggregate Score: 53/100, User Score: 3.2/10

Billed as "beyond a racing game," this vroom-vroom title from studios in Germany and Poland received pretty unanimous reviews. Critics noted that the game fell short in nearly every way, especially in a year featuring high-quality racing games. In the eyes of critics, this underwhelming entry was best left unplayed.

8. The Purrfect Bubsy Collection

Aggregate Score: 53/100, Audience Score: 8.6/10

To begin with: the confusing punctuation is a silly strike against it. This anthology of 1990s-era platforming games revives a rude feline known for incessant jokes. Critics observed that these games were mediocre originally and haven't gotten better with age. The improbably high user score is a peculiar oddity to the Metascore.

7. Hunter x Hunter Fighting Game

Aggregate Score: 53, Audience Score: 3.5

This manga-based fighting game encountered widespread disappointment from both reviewers and players. It was lambasted for a limited fighter lineup and a minimal offering of content. Fan reaction was especially vitriolic, with some stating a hope that the title's flop would serve as a lesson for future projects.

6. Riders Vs Dogoos

Aggregate Score: 51, User Score: 5.3

A part of the anime-style Hyperdimension Neptunia series, this bike-riding title tasks players with collecting slime-like creatures. The assessment was that its effort to mimic a rolling-collection feel was unsuccessful, coming across as more of a low-effort product than a worthy addition to the franchise. Its short length combined with a premium price seemed like a bold choice.

5. Captain Blood

Metascore: 50, User Score: 5.3

This title is a piece of lost media from the mid-2000s, launched after a very long time in production delays. The publishers made the decision to release the game as an authentic product of its time, fully aware that modern gamers might dislike its dated design. As such, many reviews noted that the interesting history of its resurrection was far richer than the end product.

4. Scar-Lead

Metascore: 44, Audience Score: 2.4

This anime-styled third-person shooter modeled after games like *Returnal* fell flat with critics. Common complaints included uninspired foes, monotonous stage design, and a snoozy narrative. A much-criticized system involving the protagonist's clothing was seen as adding nothing and took away from the game's enjoyment.

3. Paramedic Simulator

Metascore: 44, Audience Score: 4.9

Imagine the strategic medical sims of the past, then strip away the compelling story. That, according to reviews, is essentially *Ambulance Life*. Critics found the emergency response sections to be monotonous, and the treatment of mental health topics was criticized as being poorly executed. The overall experience was deemed a missed opportunity.

2. Tamagotchi Plaza

Aggregate Score: 43, Audience Score: 5.8

This departure from the classic digital companion formula makes the franchise into a minigame collection title. The result, per critics, was a dull assortment of simple minigames that very soon became boring. Some reviews went so far as to label it one of the lowest-quality titles available on its platform, noting a dearth of satisfying gameplay.

1. MindsEye

Aggregate Score: 37, Audience Score: 2.5

Arriving as a major open-world action game from a studio led by well-known figures, *MindsEye* was a notable disappointment. Reviews savaged its poor shooting mechanics, uninspired storytelling, and a host of horrendous bugs. Critics found it to be a regression compared to decades-old games in the same genre. Despite the scathing reviews, a tiny number of optimistic players found fun in the experience, offering a lonely vote of confidence.
