Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.
Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the ability to challenge certain rulings from the official, echoing the system already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
